Oct. 13, 2002 ORONO, Maine - Sixth-ranked Maine stormed to a 5-0 lead and cruised to an 8-1 victory over Lake Superior State in Saturday's championship game of the Black Bear Classic. Tournament most valuable player Colin Shields had a hat trick for Maine (2-0). Troy Barnes added a goal and two assists. LSSU (1-1) trailed 3-0 after the first period and 5-1 heading into the third period. The Lakers gave up two short-handed goals in the final stanza. Freshman Kory Scoran scored Lake Superior State's only goal on a power play at 10:02 of the second period. Colin Nicholson and Bo Cheesman had assists. Maine out-shot the Lakers 43-16. Losing goalie Matt Violin totaled 19 saves. Terry Denike entered the game in the second period and stopped 16 shots. Senior Jeremy Backusz, who had two assists in Friday's 2-1 victory over Quinnipiac, was the Lakers' only selection to the all-tournament team. Senior Aaron Davis and freshman Adrian Kremblewski scored power-play goals for LSSU in that contest. Nicholson and Mike Adamek added assists. Denike was the winning goalie with 21 saves. LSSU out-shot the Bobcats 33-22. Maine advanced to the championship game with a 2-1 exhibition victory over New Brunswick. Quinnipiac and New Brunswick tied 2-2 in the consolation game. The Lakers play host to Mercyhurst College at 7:05 p.m. on Oct. 18-19 during LSSU's Great Lakes State Weekend. |
