HAMILTON, N.Y. - Jon Smyth's goal with five minutes remaining in the Friday's hockey game lifted Colgate to a 3-2 non-conference victory over Lake Superior State at Starr Rink.

Colgate's (3-0) victory came in its home opener, while LSSU (0-1) suffered a loss in its first regular-season game.

LSSU tied the game, 2-2, with a power-play goal less than two minutes before Smyth's game-winner. Freshman John Nogatch's slapshot redirected off of Colgate defenseman Mike Campaner's stick and past goaltender Steve Silverthorn.

Colgate took is first lead of the game at 2:29 of the third period when Dave Thomas banged a loose rebound over a sprawled Lake Superior State goalie, Jeff Jakaitis.

Eamon DelGiacco knotted the score at 1-1 at 16:32 of the second period with a breakaway goal. Smyth located the defenseman exiting the penalty box, springing his teammate in alone on Jakaitis.

Laker Alex Dunn opened the scoring with a power-play goal at 7:50 of the second period. He found himself along on the side of the net and drove across the goalmouth to jam the puck into an open side.

Mike Adamek assisted on both Laker goals. Barnabas Birkeland also drew an assist on Nogatch's goal.

Jakaitis totaled 26 saves, including 12 in the third period. Silverthorn stopped 12 shots. The Lakers were 2-for-8 on the power play, while the Raiders finished 0-for-3.
