Lakers, Griffs skate to a third straight deadlock

Dominic Osman

Oct. 17, 2003

BUFFALO, N.Y. - Lake Superior State freshman Dominic Osman scored with 31 seconds remaining in regulation to help the Lakers salvage a 1-1 tie with Canisius on Friday at the Buffalo State Sports Arena.

The non-conference game was the Lakers' official season opener. The Lakers are now 0-0-3 in their all-time series against the Golden Griffins as the two teams tied 2-2 and 4-4 in Sault Ste. Marie last year.

Michael Cohen scored an even-strength goal at 14:35 of the first period to give Canisius (0-1-2) a 1-0 lead that stood until the final minute of the third period.

With 1:11 remaining in regulation, LSSU coach Frank Anzalone pulled goalie Matt Violin in favor of an extra attacker and the move paid off. Sophomores B.J. Pelkey and Nathan Ward assisted on Osman's goal.

LSSU out-shot Canisius 40-18. Violin totaled 15 saves through regulation and two during the overtime period. Bryan Worosz stopped 39 shots for Canisius.

Both teams were 0-for-3 on the power play.

The Lakers and Griffins meet in Game 2 of their series at 7:05 p.m. Saturday.
