Lakers sweep Mercyhurst

Oct. 19, 2002

SAULT STE. MARIE - The Lake Superior State hockey team completed a weekend sweep by beating Mercyhurst 3-1 Saturday at Taffy Abel Arena.

Veteran players were responsible for all of LSSU's goal scoring throughout the weekend, which included a 3-2 win Friday. The back-to-back victories made for the Lakers' first series sweep since December, 2000. They are also 3-1 and off to their best start in two years.

In Saturday's game, senior Jeremy Bachusz and junior Chris Peterson scored early in the second period to give LSSU a 2-0 lead. Freshmen Matt Chafe and Colin Nicholson drew assists. Mercyhurst (0-2) answered with a power-play goal at 5:39 of the second period.

LSSU maintained its lead throughout the third period, killing off a penalty with five minutes to go and getting an empty-net goal from sophomore Bo Cheesman with two seconds remaining.

Winning goalie Terry Denike totaled 24 saves to earn the win and improve to 2-0. Losing goalie Andy Franck had 23 saves. The Lakers were 0-for-3 on the power play, while Mercyhurst was 1-for-4.

LSSU had 11 freshmen in the lineup. Senior forward Aaron Davis missed the game due to illness.

LSSU opens Central Collegiate Hockey Association play on Thursday and Friday at Michigan State.
