Lake State and Clarkson face off in non-conference series

Barnabas Birkeland

Oct. 19, 2006

SAULT STE MARIE - The Lake Superior State hockey team travels to Potsdam, N.Y., for the first time since Nov. 28, 1969, to play the Clarkson Golden Knights at Cheel Arena.

The series marks the return of Lakers coach Jim Roque, who served as an assistant coach at Clarkson for six years prior to returning to Sault Ste. Marie, where he played and coached, in 2001.

The last time these two teams met, the Lakers beat the Golden Knights 5-4 in the 1995 NCAA Quarterfinal in Worcester, Mass. The Lakers hold a record of 4-2 against the Golden Knights. The games span from 1969 to 1994. Four of the six games were played in the NCAA tournament.

The Lakers, 1-1 in the Central Collegiate Athletic Association, will challenge the unbeaten Golden Knights (3-0-1) in the Eastern College Athletic Conference, at 7 p.m. Friday and Saturday night. Lake State will be the only team from the CCHA on Clarkson's schedule this year. Both of this weekend's games will be broadcast live on WSUE 101.3 FM and simulcast on www.lssulakers.com.

Lake State comes off a big win against the Ohio State Buckeyes. LSSU lost the first game last weekend 1-0, with senior Jeff Jakaitis totaling 43 saves in goal. Saturday night, the Lakers bounced back, firing on all cylinders, snapping a three-game scoreless streak against the Buckeyes with a 7-6 overtime victory. Senior Dominic Osman scored the game-winning goal 2 1/2 minutes into overtime. Freshmen goaltender Pat Inglis totaled 29 saves to earn his first collegiate victory.

With 12 returning letter winners, the Lakers lack some experience, but it didn't show Saturday night.

"It was tough coming in with no goals tonight (Saturday), but we had confidence from last night," Osman noted after the OSU victory. "It's so nice to see the freshmen step up like they have. They inspired me tonight. We knew if we stuck with our game plan we wouldn't be shut out again."

Freshman Nik Sellers, Matt Martello, John Scrymgeour and Nathan Perkovich scored Laker goals Saturday night. Freshman defensemen Steven Kaunisto and Simon Gysbers picked up two assists each, while rookies Pat Aubry, and Sellers had one each.

Clarkson recently snapped a 13-game losing streak on the road. The Knights hadn't won a road game since early last December, but pounded Providence College in Rhode Island, 6-1. The Golden Knights are undefeated, but tied the University of Massachusetts last Saturday night.

LSSU and Clarskon could meet again in the second round of the Badger Classic in Madison, Wis., Dec. 29-30. Providence and host Wisconsin are also participating in that tournament.
