Lakers fall in CCHA opener

Oct. 24, 2002

EAST LANSING - Michigan State spoiled Lake Superior State's Central Collegiate Hockey Association opener with a 7-0 win at Munn Arena on Thursday. The Spartans (3-2 overall, 2-1 CCHA) broke open a 2-0 game with five goals in the third period.

Michigan State scored goals at 7:17 and 14:20 of the first period on passes from the right corner. LSSU sophomore Terry Denike replaced starter Matt Violin in net at that point and shut out the Spartans until Tim Hearon made it 3-0 at 2:11 of the third period.

Denike stopped an MSU break-away at 3:34, but the Spartans put the game out of reach with three power play goals in just under 10 minutes. MSU's five-goal third period included four goals during the final 12:23.

"We tried to get them to push in the third period," LSSU coach Frank Anzalone said. "We asked them to play harder and we got blown out. We competed in the second period and wanted them to do even more. It went totally backwards. Time was that you'd ask guys to play harder and they played harder. I don't know what else to say."

Denike finished totaled 27 saves, while Violin had six. Winning goalie Matt Migliaccio totaled 23 saves. The Lakers (3-2 overall, 0-1 CCHA) were 0-for-4 on the power play while Michigan State was 3-for-5.
