NOTRE DAME, Ind. - Lake Superior State stayed within reach of a strong and fast Notre Dame hockey team Friday until the Irish scored twice in the middle of the third period and extended a one-goal lead to 4-1.

No. 13 Notre Dame dominated the final 11 minutes of regulation to secure the 4-1 win and sweep the Central Collegiate Hockey Association series. The Irish improved to 6-3-0 overall and 4-1-0 in the CCHA, while LSSU dropped to 1-4-1 overall and 0-2-0 in league play.

LSSU sophomore Nathan Perkovich scored his fifth goal in six games at 16:24 of the second period and cut a two-goal Notre Dame lead in half. Matt Cowie and Troy Schwab assisted on the power-play goal.

Despite limited scoring chances, the Lakers played strong defensively to stay with reach. The momentum finally swung when Eric Condra took advantage of an LSSU turnover gave the Irish a 3-1 lead with a goal at 9:35 of the third period. Evan Rankin's power-play goal came 2:47 later.

UND's Christian Hanson opened the scoring with a short-handed goal at 19:19 of the first period. Kyle Lawson made it 2-0 with a power-play goal at 4:54 of the second period. Notre Dame finished 2-for-5 on the power play, while LSSU was 1-for-7.

The Irish out-shot Lake Superior State 36-17, including 18-4 in the third period. UND goaltender Brad Phillips totaled 16 saves to earn his first win of the season. LSSU freshman Brian Mahoney-Wilson (1-1-0) had 32 saves and suffered his first collegiate loss.

The Lakers play a non-conference series next Friday and Saturday at Wayne State.
