Nov. 9, 2002

SAULT STE. MARIE - The Lake Superior State hockey team again failed to take advantage of Ohio State penalties as the Buckeyes won 5-2 Saturday at Taffy Abel Arena and swept the Central Collegiate Hockey Association series.

The Lakers were 0-for-6 on the power play for the night and 0-for-11 for the weekend. They fell to 3-7-0 overall and 0-6-0 in the CCHA.

OSU, which currently has the top-rated penalty killing unit in CCHA play, improved to 5-2-1 overall and 3-0-1 in the league.

Miguel Lafleche had two goals and an assist to lead the Buckeyes, who built a 3-0 lead before LSSU scored its first goal at 16:25 of the second period. Scott May and Daymen Bencharski each added a goal and an assist, and Paul Caponigri had two assists. Chris Olsgard scored OSU's other goal.

Laker freshman Nathan Ward scored his first goal of the season to cut Ohio State's lead to 3-1. Alex Dunn and Kory Scoran drew assists. Freshman teammate Ren Fauci also had his first career goal at 9:45 of the third period to make it 5-2. Ward had the only assist.

Ohio State out-shot LSSU 31-12 during the first two periods, but the Lakers dominated the third period 13-5. OSU goalie Dave Caruso totaled 23 saves to improve to 2-0-0. LSSU goalie Terry Denike had 31 saves and fell to 2-2-0.

The early portion of the Lakers' CCHA schedule doesn't get any easier as they play at Michigan Nov. 15-16. Ohio State plays host to Michigan State Nov. 15-16. <
