DETROIT - Troy Schwab and Nathan Perkovich scored even-strength goals 5:35 apart in the third period to give the Lake Superior State hockey team an insurmountable lead over Wayne State during Friday's non-conference game played at the Michigan State Fairgrounds Coliseum. Wayne State pulled the goalie in favor of an extra attacker during the final 1:12 of regulation and scored a goal with nine seconds remaining, but LSSU held on to win the game, 3-2. Steven Kaunisto scored a 4-on-3 power-play goal at 2:06 of the first period to give the Lakers a 1-0 lead. Dan Eves and Nik Sellers assisted on the play. WSU's Bryan Olds answered with an unassisted goal at 12:32 of the opening period. The score remained 1-1 until the 4:32 mark of the third period, when Schwab scored his first goal of the season. Simon Gysbers drew the only assist. Perkovich tallied the game-winner at 10:03 of the third period during a 2-on-1 break-away set up by Rick Schofield and Steve Oleksy. Perkovich extended his scoring streak to six goals in seven games. Tylor Michel cut LSSU's lead in half during the final minute as the Warriors threw six skaters at Laker goaltender Pat Inglis. Lake State won the ensuing faceoff to secure the win. Inglis totaled 20 saves and earned his first win of the season. He improved his record to 1-3-1. WSU's Brett Bothwell (0-3-0) totaled 22 saves. The Lakers were 1-for-3 on the power play, while Wayne State finished 0-for-5. The Lakers (2-4-1 overall) and the Warriors (0-6-1) play again Saturday at 7:05 p.m. |
