Warriors edge Lakers in power-play standoff

DETROIT - Wayne State's 2-for-6 finish on the power play made the difference in Saturday's non-conference hockey game as the Warriors edged Lake Superior State, 2-1, to earn their first win of the season.

Wayne State (1-6-1 overall) took a 1-0 lead on a power-play goal by Jon Grabarek at 16:56 of the first period, and Jared Katz added a power-play goal at 17:06 of the second period. The Warriors were 2-for-5 with the man-advantage through two periods, and 0-for-1 in the third.

LSSU (2-5-1 overall) was 0-for-3 on the power play in the first period and 0-for-1 in the second. Nathan Perkovich eventually scored at 2:33 of the third period during the Lakers' fifth power-play opportunity. It was his seventh goal in eight games, and Josh Sim drew the only assist.

Lake Superior State finished 1-for-7 on the power play for the game. The Lakers out-shot WSU, 25-17, including 12-1 in the third period. They had a two-man advantage during the final 42 seconds of regulation as WSU took a penalty at 19:18 and LSSU goaltender Brian Mahoney-Wilson was pulled in favor of an extra attacker. WSU goalie Kyle Funkenhauser made a big save on a Perkovich shot at the buzzer to secure the win.

Mahoney-Wilson (1-2-0) totaled 15 saves. Funkenhauser improved his record to 1-3-1.

LSSU's resumes Central Collegiate Hockey Association play with a home series against Michigan on Nov. 16-17. Both games will begin at 7:05 p.m. at Taffy Abel Arena.
