SAULT STE. MARIE - No. 1-ranked Michigan scored five unanswered goals to come back from a 1-0 deficit and beat Lake Superior State 5-1 Friday at Taffy Abel Arena.

Michigan, which is undefeated in the Central Collegiate Hockey Association, scored three goals in the second period and two in the third. Kevin Porter led U-M (10-1-0 overall, 7-0-0 CCHA) with two goals and one assist. Aaron Palushaj, Travis Turnbull and Max Pacioretty scored one goal each.

Rick Schofield gave LSSU an early 1-0 lead with an even-strength goal at 12:02 of the first period. Dan Eves and Zac MacVoy drew the assists. The Lakers (2-6-1 overall, 0-3-0 CCHA) came out flying in the first period and were almost overzealous, picking up two penalties in the first three minutes. Despite getting out-shot 12-6, they limited U-M's quality scoring chances.

Michigan took advantage of LSSU miscues in the second period. The Wolverines built a 3-1 lead on Turnbull's even-strength goal at 17:57 of the second period. Porter's second goal, which was a power-play marker, made it 4-1 at 8:09 of the third.

U-M finished 1-for-3 on the power play, while LSSU was 0-for-5.

Winning goalie Billy Sauer totaled 24 saves. Brian Mahoney-Wilson totaled 28 saves for LSSU.

LSSU and U-M face off again Saturday at 7:05 p.m. at Taffy Abel Arena. The Lakers and Wolverines are playing the first two-game series against each other in Sault Ste. Marie since the 1995-96 season.
