SAULT STE. MARIE - The Lake Superior State hockey team, which is unbeaten in three straight Central Collegiate Hockey Association games for the first time since late in the 1999-00 season, travels to Notre Dame for a league series on Friday and Saturday.

The Lakers (4-3-3 overall, 2-3-1 CCHA) and Irish (5-3-1 overall, 4-3-1 CCHA) play Friday at 7:35 p.m. and Saturday at 7:05 p.m. at the Joyce Center in Notre Dame, Ind. Both games will be aired live on WSUE 101.3 FM and simulcast on

Laker hockey fans are once again paying attention to the CCHA standings. LSSU has climbed out of the cellar and is in a three-way tie for ninth place. The Lakers, Western Michigan and Nebraska-Omaha have five points each, followed by defending champion Ferris State with four.

LSSU also has two games in hand on most CCHA teams and four games in hand on leaders Ohio State and Michigan State. The Lakers have finished 12th in the league standings three straight years since tying for third in 1999-00.

Junior forward Bo Cheesman and freshman forward Trent Campbell each had a goal and an assist as LSSU defeated Bowling Green 4-2 last Friday. The Lakers skated to their first scoreless tie in school history on Saturday as freshman goaltender Jeff Jakaitis totaled 30 saves in his first career shutout.

The LSSU-BGSU series marked the first time the Lakers have accumulated at least three points during a CCHA series since they swept Nebraska-Omaha on Nov. 3-4, 2000.

Notre Dame, which is currently tied with Miami for fourth in the CCHA, shut out the U.S. National Team Development Program Under-18 squad 4-0 in an exhibition game last weekend. On Nov. 7-8, the Irish lost 3-1 and tied 3-3 at Michigan State.

Lake Superior State hopes to avenge last year's 3-2 and 6-3 losses at Notre Dame, during which the Irish out-shot LSSU 106-52 for the series. This season, the Lakers are out-shooting opponents by an average of 30.2 to 26.3.

LSSU and Notre Dame are cluster opponents and will also meet March 5-6 in Sault Ste. Marie.

Senior forwards Aaron Gill (3-8-11) and Rob Globke (5-4-9), and junior forward Cory McLean (4-4-8) lead the Irish in scoring. Freshman goaltender David Brown (3-2-1) has a 1.48 goals-against average and .952 save percentage, while junior Morgan Cey (1-1-0) posts a 2.04 gaa and .940 save percentage.

So far this season, Notre Dame is .171 on power play conversions and .912 in penalty killing.

Campbell and sophomore forward Nathan Ward are leading the Lakers in scoring with three goals and four assists each. Freshman forward Dominic Osman (5-1-6) leads the team in goals scored.

Junior goaltender Matt Violin (2-3-2) has a 2.90 gaa and .877 save percentage, while Jakaitis (2-0-1) has a 1.19 gaa and .960 save percentage through four games in his rookie season.

LSSU is .140 on the power play and is killing penalties at a .714 rate.
