Lakers, Bulldogs skate to 2-2 tie

Bo Cheesman

Nov. 19, 2004

SAULT STE. MARIE - Ferris State trailed 1-0 in the first period and 2-1 in third, but came from behind on both occasions to tie Friday's Central Collegiate Hockey Association game, 2-2.

LSSU (3-8-1 overall, 1-5-1 CCHA) was out-shot 37-23, but hit the post twice and pressured the Bulldogs heavily during the last two minutes of the overtime period. FSU goaltender Mike Brown fended off overtime scoring chances by Lakers Derek R. Smith and Jon Booras.

Laker goalie Matt Violin was much busier throughout the game and was a key to killing off FSU's six power plays, including a five-on-three in the first period.

Bo Cheesman scored the first goal of the game at 4:57 of the first period, giving LSSU a 1-0 lead. Nathan Ward drew the only assist.

Ferris State's Jeff Legue tied it 1-1 with a short-handed goal at 11:36 of the opening period. It was the first short-handed goal the Lakers have allowed this season.

Booras made it 2-1 at 1:29 of the third period, but FSU answered at 7:06 on goal by Matt Rutkowski.

Matt Restoule and Dan Eves drew assists on Booras' goal.

Violin (1-1-1) totaled 35 saves in his second start of the season. Brown (3-6-1) stopped 21-of-23 shots.

LSSU and Ferris State will play again Saturday at 7 p.m. at Taffy Abel Arena.
