SAULT STE. MARIE - The Lake Superior State hockey team let two one-goal leads slip away during Friday's 2-2 tie with Ferris State, but refused to fold after coming back from an early one-goal deficit on Saturday at Taffy Abel Arena.

The Lakers (3-6-1 overall, 3-4-1 Central Collegiate Hockey Association) took a 3-1 lead at the 8:52 mark of the second period on Saturday and held on to win 5-4. They picked up three points in the CCHA standings for the weekend and moved out of their ninth-place tie.

LSSU trailed throughout most of the first period, but tied it 1-1 on Dan Eves' first collegiate goal at 1:09 of the second period. The Lakers made it 3-1 on power-play goals by Derek R. Smith and Kory Scoran.

Ferris State (4-9-1 overall, 1-6-1 CCHA) cut the lead to 3-2 on a power-play goal by Jeff Legue at 9:34 of the middle stanza. Laker Colin Nicholson regained LSSU's two-goal lead at 4:50 of the third period.

Legue scored another power-play goal at 9:30, but LSSU's Matt Restoule answered at 10:57.

FSU's Carter Thompson completed the scoring with a goal at 19:44, while the Bulldogs played with the goalie pulled in favor of an extra attacker.

Jon Booras drew assists on goals by Eves and Restoule. Scoran, Restoule, Ren Fauci, Trent Campbell, Steve McJannet and John Nogatch also had assists.

LSSU sophomore Jeff Jakaitis (2-5-0) totaled 32 saves, including 14 in the second period and 10 in the third.

FSU starting goaltender Derek MacIntyre stopped 15 shots and was pulled in the second period after giving up his third goal of the game. Mike Brown totaled six saves.

Both teams were 2-for-5 on the power play.

The Lakers play host to Northern Michigan at 7:35 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 26.
