Notre Dame ends LSSU's three-game unbeaten streak

NOTRE DAME, Indiana - Notre Dame scored two unanswered goals in the third period to pull away from a 3-3 tie and beat Lake Superior State 5-3 in a Central Collegiate Hockey Association game Friday at the Joyce Center.

UND freshman T.J. Jindra scored his first career goal at 2:51 of the third period to give the Irish (6-3-1 overall, 5-3-1 CCHA) a 4-3 lead. Senior Rob Globke added a goal at 17:37, just after a UND power play had ended, to give Notre Dame the two-goal cushion.

LSSU (4-4-3 overall, 2-4-1 CCHA), which entered the contest with a three-game unbeaten streak, came back from a 3-1 deficit in the second-period on goals by junior Ryan Reid at 15:15 and freshman Derek Smith at 15:46.

Junior Bo Cheesman scored the Lakers' first goal at 12:22 of the first period to tie it, 1-1.

Mike Walsh, Globke and Jason Paige accounted for the early goals that gave the Irish a 3-1 lead.

UND freshman goaltender David Brown (4-2-1) totaled 16 saves, and LSSU junior Matt Violin (2-4-2) stopped 18 shots. Notre Dame was 1-for-4 on the power play, while the Lakers were 0-for-4.

Nathan Ward, Barnabas Birkeland, Dominic Osman and Ryan Branham drew assists for the Lakers. Reid's goal was unassisted.

LSSU held the Irish to 23 shots on goal, including five in the first period. Last year, Notre Dame out-shot the Lakers 106-52 for the series.
