MARQUETTE - Northern Michigan extended its conference-leading short-handed goals total to six on Matt Siddall's game-winner in the second period Friday against Lake Superior State.

Siddall's goal, which was NMU's sixth short-handed goal of the season, gave the Wildcat hockey team a 3-2 lead at 13:18 of the second period. NMU went on to beat LSSU 4-2 in Game 1 of the Cappo Cup series.

LSSU (2-8-1 overall, 0-5-0 Central Collegiate Hockey Association) and NMU (4-9-0 overall, 3-8-0 CCHA) play Game 2 of the four-game, total-goals series at 7:35 p.m. Saturday at Taffy Abel Arena.

Lake Superior State led twice in the first period. John Scrymgeour scored at 10:02 to give the Lakers a 1-0 lead, but NMU points leader Nick Sirota tied it with a power-play goal at 11:31. Josh Sim and Chad Nehring assisted on Scrymgeour's goal.

LSSU regained the one-goal lead on Dan Eves' power-play goal at 13:18 of the opening period as linemates Zac MacVoy and Rick Schofield drew assists.

Mark Olver and Siddall tied scored in the second period for NMU, and Wildcat Gregor Hanson rounded out the scoring at 13:42 of the third period.

Lake Superior State out-shot Northern Michigan, 28-21, and finished 1-for-5 on the power play. NMU was 1-for-4 with the man-advantage.

The contest was a matchup of two freshman goaltenders. LSSU rookie Brian Mahoney-Wilson totaled 17 saves, while NMU's Reid Ellingson stopped 26 of 28 shots on goal.
