Wildcats score twice in third period to snap 1-1 tie

SAULT STE. MARIE - Northern Michigan scored two goals during a 1:38 span in the third period to snap a 1-1 tie and beat the Lake Superior State hockey team 3-1 Saturday at Taffy Abel Arena.

NMU (5-9-0 overall, 4-8-0 Central Collegiate Hockey Association), which also won 4-2 on Friday in Marquette, swept the home-and-home series and took a 7-3 lead in the Cappo Cup total-goals series.

LSSU is 2-9-1 overall and 0-6-0 in the CCHA heading into next weekend's home series against sixth-ranked Michigan State.

The Laker line of Dan Eves, Rick Schofield and Zac MacVoy extended its goal-scoring streak to four games when Eves tallied LSSU's only goal during a power play at 5:27 of the first period. Matt Cowie and MacVoy picked up the assists. Eves has 2-2--4 and MacVoy 1-3--4 in the last two series.

NMU's Mark Olver tied the game 1-1 with a power-play goal at 19:08 of the first period.

LSSU, which struggled in the second period during its last three games, held the Wildcats scoreless in the middle stanza on Saturday. Gregor Hanson scored what proved to be the game-winner at 9:31 of the third period, and Olver added his second goal of the game at 11:08.

LSSU finished 1-for-6, while NMU was 1-for-4 on the power play.

Wildcat goalie Reid Ellingson (3-2-0) totaled 19 saves and LSSU netminder Brian Mahoney-Wilson (1-5-0) had 21 saves.
