Lakers, US Under-18s Skate to 1-1 Tie

SAULT STE. MARIE - All of the scoring was done in the first period as the Lake Superior State and the United States National Team Development Program Under-18 squad skated to a 1-1 overtime tie in an exhibition game Saturday at Taffy Abel Arena.

J.D. Corbin carried the puck from behind LSSU's net and scored an unassisted goal at 11:51 of the first period to give the Under-18 squad a 1-0 lead.

LSSU's Colin Nicholson won a scrum in the corner and beat U.S. Under-18 goalie Christopher Holt on the glove side to even the score at 19:47 of the opening period.

Lake Superior State (4-9-1 unofficially, 3-9-0 officially) out-shot the Under-18s 22-11 in the second and third periods, but the U.S. squad had the better scoring opportunities in the overtime. Laker goalie Matt Violin stopped point-blank shots by Corbin and T.J. Hensick. Holt stopped a Nicholson shot from the slot.

Holt totaled 34 saves, while Violin had 25. LSSU was 0-for-3 on the power play. the Under-18s were 0-for-2.

The Lakers were idle on Friday, while the Under-18 team (11-13-2) lost 2-1 to the Soo Indians Junior A team in an exhibition game at Big Bear Arena. The Lakers resume Central Collegiate Hockey Association play Nov. 29-30 at Western Michigan.
