Lakers sign NOJHL scoring leader

Nov. 27, 2002

SAULT STE. MARIE - A Lake Superior State hockey team looking to add scoring has signed the Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League's scoring leader, forward Jeffrey Rainville of the Soo Junior Greyhounds, to a National Letter of Intent.

Rainville, who is from Blind River, Ont., has a league-leading 36 goals and 25 assists in 21 games this season. As of Nov. 25, he has led the Greyhounds (21-3-0) to a nine-point NOJHL lead. They are riding a 14-game winning streak.

Rainville had an opportunity to play in the United States Hockey League, but chose to stay closer to home to play for Junior Greyhounds coach Jim Capy. According to LSSU coach Frank Anzalone, Rainville has received some recruiting attention from Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference schools in addition to LSSU.

Rainville has the potential to be a goal scorer for the Lakers.

"He's good with the puck, has good vision, passes well and shoots well," Anzalone said.

Rainville is 5-foot-11, 180 pounds, has a 1984 birthday and will be a young freshman by Central Collegiate Hockey Association standards.

"He will have to get bigger and stronger, and learn to play with bigger players," Anzalone said. "But he is a skill player."
