MARQUETTE, Mich.-- Northern Michigan shut out the Lake Superior State hockey team 3-0 Saturday night at Berry Events Center in game two of the home-and-home series. The Lakers and Wildcats split the weekend after LSSU won Friday night, 3-1, in Sault Ste. Marie.

The Lakers and the Wildcats skated through a heavily-penalized scoreless first period. Northern Michigan collected four penalties to Lake Superior's three. Neither team converted on the power play during the first period.

The Wildcats' Pat Bateman ended the stalemate one minute into the second period. Bateman scored his third goal of the year off an assist from line mate Tim Hartung. Bateman rifled the puck over Laker goaltender Jeff Jakaitis's left shoulder, ricocheting it off the crossbar before it deflected into the net.

NMU's Kevin Gardner's penalty for obstruction holding had just expired when Wildcat Andrew Contois scored his second goal of the weekend, giving the Wildcats a 2-0 lead at 10:51 in the third period. Rob Lehtinen and John Miller assisted on the goal.

The Lakers pulled their goaltender with a little under four minutes in game to give themselves a 6-on-4 advantage during a two-minute penalty to Miller for delay of game.

Contois scored his second goal of the game on an empty net with 3:02 left in the game ,increasing the Wildcats' lead to 3-0.

Neither team scored on the power play. LSSU was 0-for-9 with the man advantage for the night.

Jakaitis made 29 saves and was named the third star of the game.

The Lakers resume home action next Friday, Dec. 3, when they will face Bemidji State. The puck will drop at 7:35 p.m. at Taffy Abel Arena.
