Lakers improve scoring, but fall to WMU

Senior Aaron Davis

Nov. 30, 2002

KALAMAZOO, Mich. - Lake Superior State senior Aaron Davis ended his scoring drought, but it wasn't enough to beat Western Michigan, which prevailed 4-2 in a Central Collegiate Hockey Association game Friday at Lawson Arena.

Davis split the Bronco defense, drew WMU goalie Scott Foster out of the net and tucked the puck into the far post to tie the game 2-2 at 17:10 of the first period. It was his third goal of the season and first since Oct. 18. Prior to last night he had come up empty on several break-away chances. Chris Peterson and Steve McJannett drew assists on Davis' goal.

LSSU's only other senior, captain Jeremy Bachusz, scored the first goal of the game at 5:54 of the first period. He tapped in a rebound off Mike Adamek's shot from the slot. Derek Seal was credited with the other assist.

It was also Bachusz's third goal of the season and his first since Oct. 19. WMU answered with goals by Nic Boileau at 8:48 and Brent Rumble at 14:31 of the first period and took a 2-1 lead.

Western Michigan (6-7-1 overall, 5-6-0 CCHA) held true to its four-goals-per-game scoring average, getting third-period goals from Mike Jarmuth and Trevor Cook. Jarmuth scored the game winner on a wrist shot from just inside the blue line. The Broncos out-shot LSSU 22-12 during the final two periods.

Foster totaled 20 saves and improved to 3-4-1. LSSU goalie Matt Violin (1-8-0) had 27 saves.

The Lakers' power-play woes continued as they were 0-for-6 for the night. They extended their scoreless streak with the man advantage to 37 (including last weekend's exhibition game with the U.S. NTDP Under-18 team). Western Michigan finished 0-for-2 on the power play.

LSSU (3-10-0 overall, 0-9-0 CCHA) and WMU play again tonight at 7:30 p.m. at Lawson Arena.
