Broncos hand Lakers tenth straight loss

Sophomore Terry Denike

Nov. 30, 2002

KALAMAZOO, MI.--A season of struggles and frustration continued for the Lake Superior State hockey team during the second night of its two-game series at Western Michigan. The Broncos burned LSSU for three power play goals Saturday to knock off the Lakers 3-0 in a Central Collegiate Hockey Association game at Lawson Ice Arena. Western netminder Mike Mantua stopped 22 shots to earn his third career shutout.

Western started off the scoring at the 8:38 mark of the first period when Paul Davies beat Laker goaltender Terry Denike while Ryan Branham was in the penalty box for obstruction-hooking. The 1-0 lead stood until the 16:46 mark of the second period when Dave Cousineau capitalized on another Laker penalty. Jeremy Cheyne iced the win with his power-play goal at the 14:18 mark of the third period.

The lone bright spot for LSSU was the shot total as the Broncos held a slim 23-22 edge.

"We are cutting down the shots against our goalies, but we are in a really tough situation," LSSU coach Frank Anzalone said.

Western finished 3-for-5 on the power play while Lake Superior continued to struggle with the man advantage and went 0 for 5. LSSU is one of the leat-penalized teams in the CCHA, but has played eight games without scoring a power-play goal.

"This is an example of how low our program fell, and how long and far we need to go," Anzalone said. "We are at ground zero and need to keep going forward."

The Lakers (3-11-0 overall) fell to 0-10-0 in the CCHA and are three points behind 11th-place Bowling Green. WMU improved to 7-7-1 overall, 6-6-0 in the CCHA.

Lake Superior plays host to Nebraska-Omaha at the Taffy Abel Arena on Friday and Saturday, Dec. 6-7. Both games begin at 7:05 p.m. and will be aired live on WSU 101 FM starting with the pregame show at 6:40pm. The Laker Hockey Show airs Mondays from 6:05 to 7 p.m. live from Moloney's Alley on WSOO 1230 AM and is simulcast on lssulakers.com by clicking on the Laker basketball icon.
