Dan Eves

Dec. 3, 2004

SAULT STE. MARIE - Lake Superior State came back from an early one-goal deficit, let a one-goal deficit slip away, then came from behind again to beat Bemidji State 5-4 in overtime on Friday at Taffy Abel Arena.

Matt Restoule tied the game 4-4 with 13 seconds remaining in regulation while the Lakers (5-7-1 overall) had goalie Jeff Jakaitis out of the net in favor of an extra attacker. Dan Eves and Bo Cheesman assisted on Restoule's goal, which was a part of a scrum in front of BSU goaltender Matt Climie.

Eves, a freshman, then tallied the game-winner at 2:07 of the overtime period. Jon Booras drew the only assist.

After a scoreless first period, during which Bemidji State out-shot LSSU 10-4, the Beavers (6-5-0 overall) took a one-goal lead on Rob Sirianni's power-play goal at 2:25 of the second period.

LSSU's B.J. Pelkey tied it at 7:46, and Eves gave the Lakers a 2-1 lead 42 seconds later.

Sirianni tied it 2-2 with another power-play goal at 9:57 of the second period. The deadlock stood until LSSU's Jeff Rainville scored at 3:05 of the third period.

Matt Pope and Andrew Murray scored back-to-back goals just over a minute apart for BSU, giving the Beavers at 4-3 lead with 7:02 remaining in regulation.

LSSU pulled Jakaitis with 1:23 left in the third period.

Cheesman and Derek A. Smith finished with two assists each, while Lakers Colin Nicholson, Steve McJannet and Restoule added one each. Murray had a goal and two assists for BSU.

Jakaitis (3-6-0) totaled 27 saves, while Climie (1-1-0) had 15.

BSU was 2-for-4 on the power play. LSSU was scoreless on five power-play attempts.

The teams will play again at 7:05 p.m. Saturday at Taffy Abel Arena.
