BJ Pelkey

Dec. 4, 2004

SAULT STE. MARIE - Bemidji State salvaged a split in its non-conference hockey series with Lake Superior State by scoring three unanswered goals in the third period to win Saturday's game, 3-1.

LSSU (5-8-1 overall) took a 1-0 lead at 2:53 of the first period on an even-strength goal by B.J. Pelkey. Dominic Osman and Colin Nicholson drew assists.

The Lakers were out-shot 36-25, but had several outstanding scoring chances throughout the game. BSU goaltender Layne Sedevie (6-4-0) kept the Beavers in contention until they started their scoring run with a goal by Jean-Guy Gervais at 2:37 of the third period.

BSU's Peter Jonsson scored the game-winning goal on a power play at 4:12. Teammate Andrew Murray put the game out of reach by scoring with 1:33 remaining in regulation. Murray also assisted on Jonsson's goal.

Sedevie totaled 24 saves, including 10 in the first period. LSSU goaltender Jeff Jakaitis (3-7-0) stopped 33 of 36 shots.

Bemidji State (7-5-0) finished 1-for-4 on the power play, while LSSU was 0-for-4.

The Lakers and Beavers played back-to-back games against each other for the first time since the 1973-74 season. Their rivalry dated back to the late 1960s -- the beginning of Laker Hockey.

LSSU resumes Central Collegiate Hockey Association play with a Thursday-Saturday series at Nebraska-Omaha.
