Mavericks sweep LSSU

Sophomore forward Bo Cheesman

Dec. 7, 2002

SAULT STE. MARIE - The Lake Superior State hockey team, winless in the Central Collegiate Hockey Association, came out mad, fighting mad Saturday at Taffy Abel Arena.

The Lakers (3-13-0 overall, 0-12-0 CCHA) were in an attack mode through the game and picked up more penalties than they have all season. Despite their relentlessness, they couldn't produce any offense and were shut out for the fifth time this season, 3-0, by Nebraska-Omaha.

UNO (7-7-2 overall, 5-5-0 CCHA) extended its unbeaten streak to five games by sweeping the series. The Mavericks out-shot LSSU 47-22, but never put the game out of reach. LSSU goalie Matt Violin totaled a season-high 44 saves for the second plus-40 save performance of his career.

Scotty Turner opened the scoring for UNO with a power-play goal at 5:40 of the first period. The 1-0 lead stood until the Mavs' Anthony Adams scored at 5:01 of the third period. Standout defenseman Greg Zanon assisted on both goals.

LSSU began pulling Violin in favor of an extra attacker with 3:10 remaining. UNO's Andrew Wong scored an empty-net goal at 19:52 to secure the Mavericks' win.

LSSU was 0-for-4 on the power play and totaled a season-high 15 penalties for 46 minutes. UNO totaled nine penalties for 18 minutes and was 1-for-8 on the power play.

Mavs goalie Dan Ellis totaled 22 saves to earn his sixth win of the season. Violin fell to 1-10-0.

The Lakers, hoping to break a school-record 12-game losing streak, play non-league games at St. Lawrence on Dec. 13-14.
