Lakers continue series-opener hot streak

OMAHA, Neb. - The Lake Superior State hockey team continued its dominance in series openers by beating Nebraska-Omaha 5-2 on Thursday at the Qwest Center.

The Lakers (6-8-1 overall, 5-5-1 Central Collegiate Hockey Association) improved to 5-2-1 in Thursday or Friday-night games. They handed UNO its first loss in Game 1 of a series.

Nebraska-Omaha (7-7-1 overall, 5-7-1 CCHA) led 1-0 after one period, but the Lakers came back with second-period goals by Alex Dunn, Jeff Rainville and Jon Booras. Rainville and Booras scored power-play goals less than three minutes apart.

UNO's Kaleb Betts made it 3-2 with a five-on-three power-play goal at 1:09 of the third period. Booras put the game out of reach on his second goal of the game, the Lakers' first short-handed marker of the season, at 18:14. Nathan Ward added an empty-net goal at 19:37.

Dunn also had two assists for the night, while Derek A. Smith, Rainville, Ren Fauci and Derek R. Smith added one each.

UNO out-shot LSSU 39-19. Laker goaltender Jeff Jakaitis (4-7-0) totaled 37 saves, including 19 in the first period. Mavericks goaltender Chris Holt took the loss after giving up three goals in the second period. He totaled 11 saves. Kris Tebbs had three saves in the third period.

LSSU finished 2-for-6 on the power play, while UNO was 1-for-10.

The Lakers and Mavericks play Game 2 of the series at 8:05 p.m. EST on Saturday.
