Laker icers pick up three points and inaugural Mason-Peters Cup

Colin Nicholson

Dec. 10, 2005

BEMIDJI, Minn. - Minnesota native Jeff Jakaitis totaled 41 saves Saturday to help the Lake Superior State hockey team salvage a 2-2 tie with 17th-ranked Bemidji State in Game 2 of a non-conference road series.

LSSU (9-5-4) won the total-goals series 4-3 and claimed the Mason-Peters Cup in its inaugural year. The trophy recognizes the rivalry between LSSU and BSU that dates back to the beginning of Laker hockey. It is named after former LSSU coach Ron Mason and former BSU coach Bob Peters.

For the second straight night, the teams skated through a scoreless first period. In this game, however, Jakaitis was threatened from start to finish as BSU (9-4-1) out-shot LSSU, 43-24.

Senior defenseman Kory Scoran tallied a short-handed goal midway through the second period to give LSSU a 1-0 lead. It was the first short-handed goal the Beavers have given up in 1,140 minutes.

The relentless Beavers tied it, 1-1, on Jake Bluhm's even-strength goal at 2:15 of the third period.

Colin Nicholson, who missed Friday night's game due to the flu, gave the Lakers a 2-1 lead by walking in from behind the net and scoring at 17:37 of the third period.

Trent Campbell assisted on both LSSU goals and totaled three assists for the weekend.

BSU's Rob Sirianni answered Nicholson's goal at 18:34. Jakaitis stopped 16 of 18 Bemidji State shots in the third period and had four saves in overtime.

LSSU finished 0-for-5 on the power play, while the Beavers were 0-for-6. BSU goalie Layne Sedevie totaled 22 saves.

LSSU resumes league play on Saturday and Sunday at Notre Dame, which is coached by former Laker head coach Jeff Jackson. The teams play at 7:05 p.m. on Saturday in a game that will be broadcast by Comcast in the South Bend, Ind., area. Sunday's game begins at 2:05 p.m.
