Violin named CCHA defensive player of the week

ANN ARBOR - Sophomore goaltender Matt Violin was named Central Collegiate Hockey Association defensive player of the week after blocking 78-of-84 shots he faced (.929), including a career-high 50 on Saturday, during Lake Superior State's non-conference series at St. Lawrence last weekend.

LSSU (3-14-1) tied the Saints 2-2 Saturday to break a school-record 13-game losing streak. Violin also had 28 saves in the first two periods of Friday's 6-1 loss. He gave up two goals during a five-minute major penalty in the first period.

For the season, Violin has a 3.50 goals-against average and .907 save percentage. He is ranked fifth in the CCHA in saves, averaging 27.29 saves per game.

Ohio State's R.J. Umberger was named offensive player of the week after scoring four goals and posting a plus-3 plus/minus rating in the Buckeyes' 4-1 and 3-1 victories over Nebraska-Omaha. OSU's Ryan Kesler, who had two assists and a plus-3 rating, was named rookie of the week.
