St. Lawrence sweeps the Lakers

Derek R. Smith

Dec. 19, 2004

CANTON, N.Y.---The Lake Superior State hockey team lost to the St. Lawrence Saints 4-1 Sunday afternoon. The Saints' T.J. Trevelyan notched a hat trick in game two of the Laker's non-conference action weekend. The Saints' win completes their weekend sweep over the Lakers. The Lakers are now 6-11-1 overall and 5-6-1 in the Central Collegiate Hockey Association; the last team to sweep the Lakers was the University of Michigan back in October.

The Saints' T.J. Trevelyan gave his team an early lead 1:10 into the game by scoring his 10th goal of the season. John Zeiler and Kyle Rank assisted on the goal.

Mike Madill increased the Saints lead to 2 three minutes later when he scored on the power play. Trevelyan earned his second point of the game by earning an assist. Max Taylor also assisted on the goal.

Despite a valiant effort, the Lakers were not able to convert on a three on five power play opportunity at the end of the first period.

Trevelyan scored his second goal of the game on the power play at 3:35 of the second period during a hooking penalty to Derek R. Smith.

Smith retaliated at 9:42 of the second period when he notched his second goal of the season. Junior forward Mike Adamek assisted on the goal. Adamek stole the puck from a St. Lawrence defenseman and made a one-handed pass while being hooked by a St. Lawrence player. Smith buried the puck past Saints' freshman goaltender Justin Pesony.

The Lakers pulled goaltender Jeff Jakaitis in order to have an extra attacker with six minutes left in the game. Trevelyan completed his hat trick by shooting the puck down the ice into the empty net at 14:19 of the third period.

The Lakers out-shot the Saints 40 to 36. The Saints were two for three on the power play. The Lakers were unable to convert on any of their eight attempts.

The Lakers will now head home for the Christmas holiday. They will resume action on January 7, when they will face the Notre Dame Fighting Irish on Friday night at 7:35 p.m. at Taffy Abel Arena in Sault Ste. Marie.

Merry Christmas and a safe New Year's Eve to the Lakers and all of their fans!
