Dec. 30, 2005

THUNDER BAY, Ont.--St. Francis Xavier put an end to any hope Lake Superior had of making it to the finals of the TBAY Tel Varsity Cup Friday night when the X-Men defeated the Lakers 4-2 in game three of the exhibition hockey tournament. The Lakers (10-6-4 overall, 6-6-2 Central Collegiate Hockey Association) ended the tournament 1-2-0.

Stuart McRae scored 21 seconds into the game to give the X-Men the early lead.

St. Francis Xavier scored two more unanswered goals in the early half of the second period to increase its lead to three goals.

LSSU's Dan Eves finally put his team on the scoreboard at 6:18 of the second period. Eves scored on the power play off a pass from Derek R. Smith.

Senior Nathan Ward scored another power-play goal three seconds later to bring the Lakers within one goal of the X-Men. Barnabas Birkeland and Troy Schwab assisted on the goal.

The X-Men sealed the game when they scored an empty-net goal ending the game in their favor at 4-2.

The Lakers out shot the X-Men 43-27.

Lake Superior was 2-13 on the power play. St. Francis Xavier was 0-3.

Laker goaltender Jeff Jakaitis earned third star honors of the game.

The Lakers will resume home action on Friday, January 6 when they play host to Western Michigan University. The puck will drop at 7:35 p.m. at Taffy Abel Arena. The Lakers faced the Broncos earlier this season when they swept WMU 10-0 and 3-1 in Kalamazoo, Mich.
