Three Laker athletes receive recognition

SAULT STE. MARIE - Lake Superior State sophomore Simon Laliberte` was named Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Men's Tennis Player of the Week after compiling a 6-0 in singles and doubles record in the Lakers' victories over Michigan Tech, Mercyhurst and Findlay last week.

Laliberte`, of Beauport, Que., won 6-1, 6-1 at No. 5 singles and 8-2 at No. 3 doubles against MTU. He posted a 6-0, 6-0 singles win and an 8-1 doubles victory over Mercyhurst, and picked up a 6-1, 6-1 singles win and 8-3 doubles victory against Findlay. He was teamed with senior Tomoyuki Fukushima in doubles.

Meanwhile, senior Becky Marquardt-King and freshman Jaclyn Armstrong continued to pick up post-season basketball honors. Marquardt-King was named to the Women's Division II Bulletin All-America Fourth Team, while Armstrong was one of 10 players named to the DII Bulletin national All-Freshman Team. The only other GLIAC player to receive recognition was national champion Grand Valley's Niki Reams, who was named to the all-America second team.

Marquardt-King, of Sault Ste. Marie, Mich., was the GLIAC's top scorer, averaging 18.8 points per game, and the nation's No. 1 shooter with a field-goal percentage of .711. She is a two-time All-GLIAC First Team selection.

Jacklyn Armstrong


Armstrong, a forward from Haslett, Mich., started 27 of 28 games for the Lakers and averaged 10.3 points and 4.6 rebounds per game. She was also named the GLIAC Freshman of the Year.
