MIDLAND - The Lake Superior State men's tennis team defeated Mercyhurst 5-3 in the first round of the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Tournament today in Midland.

The Lakers (8-7) fell 5-0 to 10th-ranked Northwood (14-1) in the semifinal round, and will play the third-place match at 10 a.m. Saturday.

"We were down 2-1 after doubles and fought hard for the win," LSSU coach Charlie Drury said following the quarterfinal victory. "We made it to the upper bracket, and we're pumped."

Mercyhurst will take a 9-8 record into the consolation round.
