MIDLAND - Pawel Wegrzyn was Lake Superior State's lone singles winner during the first day of competition at the ITA Men's Regional held Friday at Northwood University.

Wegrzyn defeated Michigan Tech's Matt Tronnes, 6-3, 6-1, in his first round match before losing 6-0, 6-2 to Northwood's Bertrand Vigouroux, who was the No. 16 seed.

In other LSSU singles matches on Friday, Craig Baas lost to Northwood's Matt Tansil, 6-0, 7-6, Robbie Nelson lost to Wayne State's Alejandro Gomez, 6-0, 6-1, Steve Demps lost to Grand Valley's Leon Cerdena, 3-6, 6-4 (1-0), Brandon Clayton lost to Northwood's Peter Kazianschuetz, 6-1, 6-0, and Travis Toth lost to Ferris State's Cory Banghart, 6-1, 6-0.

The Laker doubles team of Clayton and Wegrzyn defeated Grand Valley's Cerdena and Ryan Diebold, 8-4, before falling to No. 6 seed Christoph Burger and Andrew McGuire of Southern Indiana, 8-1.

In other doubles matches, Nelson and Toth lost 8-3 to Northwood, and Baas and Demps lost 8-6 to Tiffin.
