Laker women achieve highest team GPA in NCAA Division II

2006-07 Lakers

July 16, 2007

ATLANTA, Geo. - The Women's Basketball Coaches Association announced its 2006-07 Academic Top 25 Team Honor Roll for NCAA Division I, II and III, NAIA and Junior College/Community College programs. The awards recognize teams throughout the nation that have the highest grade point averages for the 2006-07 season based upon nominations submitted by WBCA-member coaches.

"It always brings the WBCA esteemed pleasure to recognize such prominent women's basketball programs that have committed themselves on the hardwood and in the classroom," WBCA CEO Beth Bass said. "Each of these teams lead by example and have set a benchmark of success academically among their peers in the sport."

The top teams in each division include South Dakota State (NCAA I), Lake Superior State (NCAA II), Hardin-Simmons (NCAA III), Dana College (NAIA) and Iowa Lakes Community College (JC/CC). These "class-act" teams combine for an average 3.630 GPA for the 2006-07 season - up from 3.602.

LSSU, under first-year head coach Jamie Pewinski, posted a 3.588 team GPA. The squad put up impressive numbers in the classroom and on the court, finishing with an 18-9 record. Individual players who earned Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference All-Academic honors were seniors Mandi Johnson and Monica Rehmann, junior Danielle Makins, and sophomores Jaclyn Armstrong and Alyssa Vanderwal.

"Without a doubt our girls dedicate themselves both on the court and in the classroom," Pewinski said. "They are going to be ecstatic to know they were No. 1. This is such a good group. This is a demanding position to be in, and they stepped up and met the challenge.
