BAY CITY - For the second straight year, the Lake Superior State women's basketball team was picked to finish fourth in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Pre-Season Poll. This year, however, media did the voting rather than league coaches. Last season, the Lakers were picked fourth and tied for second in the North Division, finishing 18-9 overall and 13-5 in league play. "We have eight returning players back, and most of our experience will be in the post," LSSU second-year head coach Jamie Pewinski said. "We have six new freshmen, and five of them are guards. Almost all of them will have to play significant minutes." LSSU junior center Jaclyn Armstrong was named by league coaches to the 2007-08 All-GLIAC Pre-Season Team. She is the Lakers' top-returning scorer and rebounder. The former GLIAC Freshman of the Year averaged 10.1 points and 4.9 rebounds per game last season. LSSU opens the 2007-08 season with exhibition games at Michigan on Nov. 3 and Michigan State on Nov. 4. "I don't know if our freshmen can learn that quickly, but we'll throw them in there and see what happens," Pewinski said of the openers against Big Ten competition. "We are inexperienced, but we have balance and versatility. Our seniors have all started at some point in their careers, and we expect big things out of them. I really like our team chemistry. Our leadership will allow the younger players to learn quickly."
