SAULT STE. MARIE - The Lake Superior State men's and women's basketball teams are heading opposite directions to play in Thanksgiving holiday tournaments. The LSSU women's team travels to Ferris State to face Great Lakes Valley Conference opponents for the second straight week. The Lakers (1-1) play Kentucky Wesleyan (1-0) at 4 p.m. on Friday and Southern Illinois-Edwardsville (2-0) at 4 p.m. Saturday in Big Rapids. The LSSU men's team plays Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference opponents Minnesota-Moorhead at 6 p.m. CT on Friday and Northern State at 8 p.m. CT on Saturday in Aberdeen, S.D. The Laker men, who are 0-2, are meeting NSU (2-0) and Minnesota-Moorhead (1-0) for the first time in school history, and have an all-time record 1-2 against NSIC schools. Junior Ryan Kuhl averaged 11.5 points and 4.5 rebounds to lead LSSU during last week's games against Lewis and Wisconsin-Parkside. Junior Tim VanOudheusden added 11 ppg, followed by sophomore Scott Perkins, who averaged 10 points and 6.5 rebounds per game. Perkins and freshman Micah Hudson were a combined 8-for-15 from three-point range. Senior Shalyn Beauchamp averaged 12.5 points, 8.0 rebounds, 6.5 assists and 2.0 steals per game to lead the Laker women last week. Senior Danielle Makins contributed 13.5 points, and junior Jackie Armstrong chipped in 10.0 points and 8.0 rebounds. As a team, the Lakers shot 51.1 percent from the field. LSSU will play the Kentucky Wesleyan women for the first time in school history. KWC is 1-0 with a 68-64 victory over Grand Valley State. The Lakers won their only meeting with SIUE, 77-64 in 2005-06. This year's Cougar team is 2-0 with victories over Central Missouri, 70-59, and Harris-Stowe, 71-61. |
