BIG RAPIDS - Southern Illinois-Edwardsville came out on the winning end of a back-and-forth women's basketball game, beating Lake Superior State 78-74 in overtime on Saturday during Day 2 of the GLIAC v. GLVC Challenge hosted by Ferris State. LSSU (2-2) led by as many as 12 points in the second half, but Laker senior Shalyn Beauchamp had to score at the buzzer to send the game into overtime. After LSSU freshman Nicole Marshall hit a three-pointer to open the scoring in overtime, SIUE (3-1) led the rest of the way. SIUE's Amber Shelton scored with 38 seconds remaining to give her team a 76-73 lead. Laker senior Daneille Makins made one of two free throws with 16 seconds left and cut the lead to two points, but LSSU couldn't get any closer. Shelton led all scorers with 24 points. Beauchamp led LSSU with 19 points and seven assists. Laker freshman Allison Jaynes added 12 points and five rebounds, and rookie Katherine LaPrairie had 12 points and four rebounds. Beauchamp, LaPrairie and Marshall combined to make 10-of-19 three-point field goal attempts. LSSU shot 50 percent from the field and made 4-of-7 free throws. SIUE shot 47 percent from the field, made 8-of-14 free throws and held a 36-32 rebounding edge. LSSU and SIUE combined to total 68 turnovers. The Lakers led 29-28 at halftime. LSSU plays its Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference opener at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday at Northwood. SIUE's lone loss was to Ferris State, 77-69, on Friday. |
