Beauchamp, Perkins are named GLIAC Players of the Week

BAY CITY - Lake Superior State guards Shalyn Beauchamp and Scott Perkins were named Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference North Division Players of the Week in women's and men's basketball, respectively.

Beauchamp, a senior from Rock, Mich., scored a career-high 22 points, and added seven rebounds and seven assists to lead LSSU to an 87-76 victory over Mercyhurst on Saturday. Two days earlier, Beauchamp scored 13 points and had seven rebounds in a loss to Gannon.

For the week, she averaged 17.5 points, 7.0 rebounds and 4.5 assists per game. She shot 40 percent from the field. For the season, Beauchamp is averaging 13.1 points along with 5.8 rebounds and 5.1 assists to lead the Lakers in all three categories.

Gannon sophomore Kim Vargas, ironically, was named GLIAC South Division Player of the Week.

Perkins, a sophomore from Perrysburg, Ohio, also led the Laker men to a 1-1 finish last week. He scored a career-high 25 points during Thursday's 75-63 loss to Gannon and totaled 17 points in an 80-59 victory over Mercyhurst on Saturday.

For the week, Perkins averaged 21 points, 6.5 rebounds and 2.0 assists per game. He shot 52 percent from the field, including 6-of-12 from three-point range. He shot 83 percent at the free-throw line.

Perkins, who is averaging 10.8 points per game for the season, contributed eight points and four rebounds to help LSSU build an insurmountable 16-point halftime lead against Mercyhurst.
