Lakers split on Day 2 in Florida

OCOEE, Fla. - Lake Superior State lost 11-1 to 13th-ranked Grand Valley State and defeated Assumption 5-3 during the second day of competition in Florida.

LSSU (2-2) pulled away from a 3-3 tie when Chelsea Maynard hit a two-run double in the top of the sixth inning. April Brandt and Erin Hulett, who reached base on hits, scored on the play.

Pitcher Jennie Elliott earned the win after relieving Stephanie Reveley in the third inning. She allowed one run on five hits, five strikeouts and no walks. Reveley struck out two batters and walked one. She also gave up five hits.

Nikki Christensen and Brandt also had doubles. Rachel Hall, Lacey Knoop, Nichole Dunford, Chevie Peralta-Evert and Helena Zandarski added one hit each.

Hall and Katie Brandt had LSSU's only hits against GVSU. Christensen and Claire Ostrowski combined to take the loss. They allowed 11 hits and totaled three strikeouts and two walks.

LSSU plays a double-header against 24th-ranked Rollins at 6 p.m. tonight.
