Lakers fall to Hillsdale in home opener

SAULT STE. MARIE - The Lake Superior State softball team played the season's first double-header on its home field Friday and fell 9-6 and 8-1 to Hillsdale.

During Game 1, LSSU enjoyed a 10-9 hitting edge, but Hillsdale (15-17 overall, 6-8 Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference) made the most of four home runs.

The highlight the game for the Lakers (6-28 overall, 1-13 GLIAC) was a five-run rally in the third inning that included a two-run single by Lisa Dahm and a three-run homer by April Brandt.

Brandt was 3-for-4 in the game, while Helena Zandarski and Dahm were both 2-for-4. Rachel Hall, Ashley Yarrington and Erin Hulett had one hit each.

LSSU pitcher Nikki Christensen took the loss, giving up six earned runs on nine hits, five walks and six strikeouts through 5.1 innings.

Hillsdale scored five runs in the bottom of the second inning to take control of Game 2. The Chargers out-hit LSSU, 9-6. Dahm and Christensen were 2-for-3 for the Lakers. Zandarski and Nicole Dunford had one hit each.

Dahm suffered the mound loss, giving up six earned runs on eight hits, one walk and nine strikeouts through five innings.

The Lakers play host to Wayne State at 3 p.m. Monday at Locey Field.
