GVSU scores early in Game 1 and late in Game 2

ALLENDALE - No. 15-ranked Grand Valley State scored eight runs during the first three innings of Game 1 and went on to shut out Lake Superior State's softball team, 8-0. GVSU scored two runs in the fifth and one in the sixth to win Game 2, 3-1.

Grand Valley State (24-11 overall, 9-5 Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference) out-hit LSSU 10-2 in the opener. April Brandt had a double and Amber Kern added a single for Lake Superior State's only hits.

LSSU starting pitcher Jennie Elliott gave up six runs on six hits, two strikeouts and one walk through 3 2/3 innings. Only three runs were earned. Stephanie Reveley allowed two runs on four hits, three walks and no strikeouts during the final 1 1/3 innings. She gave up only one earned run.

Elliott, Nikki Christensen, Chelsea Maynard and Erin Hulett singled for LSSU during Game 2. Lorrie Chaperon had the Lakers' lone RBI.

Christensen went the distance on the mound, allowing two earned runs on seven hits, no walks and four strikeouts. GVSU scored two runs in the fifth inning to break a scoreless deadlock and added one run in the sixth. LSSU scored a run in the top of the seventh.

Lake Superior State (8-28 overall, 2-14 GLIAC) plays Ashland at 11 a.m. Monday at the GVSU Softball Field.
