AU sweep ends Lakers' GLIAC Tournament bid

ALLENDALE - Ashland defeated the Lake Superior State softball team 6-1 and 10-2 Monday and knocked the Lakers out of contention for a Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Tournament berth.

The Lakers (8-30 overall, 2-16 GLIAC) conclude their season with a home double-header at 3 p.m. Friday against Findlay. The game is scheduled to be played on the Gerrish Field on Eighth Avenue.

Nikki Christensen was 3-for-4, and Jennie Elliott and Helena Zandarski were 2-for-3 as the Lakers compiled 11 hits in the first game. Rachel Hall, April Brandt, Chelsea Maynard and Lacey Knoop had one hit each. Brandt and Elliott both hit doubles.

Christensen took the pitching loss, allowing three earned runs on 13 hits, three walks and one strikeout.

Ashland (22-14 overall, 11-7 GLIAC) held LSSU to five hits in Game 2. Chevie Peralta-Everts had a double, and Elliott, Lorrie Chaperon, Maynard and Erin Hulett had singles.

Elliott took the loss, totaling eight earned runs on 12 hits, two walks and one strikeout.
