April 26, 2008

SAULT STE. MARIE - The Lake Superior State softball team concluded the 2007-08 season with an 8-4 home victory over Findlay on Saturday at Gerrish Field.

The game was originally scheduled for Friday afternoon as the second half of a Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference double-header, but was postponed due to rain. LSSU (9-31 overall, 3-17 GLIAC) played the spoiler role and knocked the Oilers (9-30 overall, 6-14 GLIAC) out of the playoffs in frigid Upper Peninsula winds.

Sophomore first baseman Amber Kern was 3-for-4 with a single, a double and a triple for three RBIs to lead LSSU to the win. She was 6-for-7 with five RBIs for the weekend.

The Lakers scored five runs in the fifth inning to take a 5-1 lead and extended it to 7-1 in the sixth. They added a single run in the seventh, and thwarted a Findlay comeback in the bottom of the seventh.

LSSU's fifth-inning rally included an RBI single by Kern, a two-run double by Chelsea Maynard and a two-run single by Helena Zandarski.

April Brandt was 2-for-3 and Jennie Elliott finished 2-for-4 for the Lakers. Rachel Hall, Nikki Christensen and Chevie Peralta-Everts had one hit each. Peralta-Everts slammed a pinch-hit double in the seventh inning.

Christensen earned the win after going 6 1/3 innings and totaling four walks and one strikeout. She allowed 10 hits and three earned runs. Reliever Elliott forced Findlay's last two batters to fly out and stranded three base runners.
