ALLENDALE - The Lake Superior State softball team finished 3-3 during its first weekend of "Fall Ball." On Saturday at Northview High School, the Lakers defeated Kellogg Community College, 10-0, Cornerstone, 4-1 and Kalamazoo Valley Community College, 6-1. On Sunday, the Lakers lost three five-inning games at Grand Valley State by scores of 3-2, 7-0 and 3-0. Rookie pitcher Jenny Elliott struck out three, walked one and tossed a one-hitter to earn the shutout victory over Kellogg Community College. She also had two hits to help her own cause. Nichole Dunford was 2-for-3 at the plate with a home run, while Amber Kern was 2-for-3 and Rachel Hall was 2-for-4. LSSU compiled 11 hits. Freshman pitcher Sam Beaubien struck out seven and walked two to earn the victory over Cornerstone. LSSU totaled nine hits as Lacey Knoop was 2-for-4 and Kern was 2-for-3. Junior Nikki Christensen finished with seven strikeouts and no walks to beat KVCC. LSSU, which totaled eight hits, was led at the plate by Dunford (2-for-3) and Knoop (2-for-4). Freshman pitcher Claire Ostrowski suffered the Game 1 loss to GVSU. She struck out four batters and walked three. LSSU totaled six hits. Elliott took the pitching loss in Game 2, totaling two strikeouts and three walks. Elliott and April Brandt added two hits each for the Lakers. Beaubien struck out two and walked one in Game 3. LSSU totaled five hits in that contest. The LSSU coaches also noted the pinch-hit triple and single by Jessi Ordiway against GVSU. LSSU will compete Sept. 22 at Midland. |
