Grondin wins first two matches at ITA Regional

MIDLAND - Lake Superior State No. 1 singles player Celina Grondin advanced through the first two rounds of the 2006 Wilson/ITA Great Lakes Women's Division II Tennis Championship, which began Friday.

Grondin, seeded fourth in the ITA regional, defeated Bellarmine's Sarah Roebker, 6-0, 6-4, in the first round, and topped Megan Farley of Indianapolis, 6-4, 6-3, in the second round. She will play No. 15-seed Jennifer Daly of Mercyhurst in the upper bracket quarterfinals on Saturday.

Grondin was the only LSSU singles player to advance out of the first round. In other matches, Megan Smith lost 6-2, 6-3 to Daly, Alex Chiakmakis fell 6-2, 6-0 to Grand Valley's Emily Zellner, and Megan LaMothe dropped a 6-3, 6-1 decision to Drury's Khrystsina Tryboi.

In the bottom bracket, Carolyn Pumford lost 6-0, 6-0 to No. 3 seed Lindsey Fischer of Indianapolis, and Lindsey Adams lost 6-3, 6-0 to Indy's Kristen Volz.

Adams and Grondin won their first doubles match, 8-3, over Ferris State's Allison Halbert and Jenna O'Dell, but lost 8-4 in the second round to Grand Valley's Lindsay Grimmer and Emily Zellner, who were seeded sixth.

Pumford and Smith defeated Bellarmine's Marcia Hornung and Monica Penon, 8-2, before falling 8-2 to Drury's Mouna Sabri and Tryboi. Chiakmakis and LaMothe suffered an 8-3 first-round loss to Drury's Megan Blosser and Eva Hankova.
