Nov. 16, 2005

Former Lake Superior State women's tennis player Mary Blake has been named a finalist for the Young Australian of the Year Award.

Blake played Nos. 1, 2 and 3 singles for LSSU in 2002 and 2003 and was also a member of the LSSU track and field team. She transferred to LSSU from Texas Wesleyan after its tennis program was dropped. She earned a degree in international business and was highly involved in campus activities.

The Young Australian of the Year Award recognises those aged 16 to 25 who are outstanding and exceptional young Australians. The Young Australian of the Year has been awarded since 1979.

Blake is a finalist representing Tasmania. The 2006 award will be presented in January and will be celebrated on Jan. 26 during Australia Day.
