Laker volleyball team opens season with two wins at FSU Tournament

BIG RAPIDS - The Lake Superior State volleyball team won six straight sets on its opening day and will take a 2-0 record into Day 2 of the Ferris State Invitational.

The Lakers defeated Glenville State, 23-30, 30-17, 30-23, 30-23, and Colorado School of Mines, 30-24, 30-15, 30-24, on Friday. They play Minnesota-Crookston at 9:30 a.m. and Alaska Anchorage at 5:30 p.m. on Saturday.

LSSU's only senior, Jamie Groos, totaled 15 kills and 10 digs during the Lakers' opener, and added nine kills and six digs against Colorado School of Mines. She posted a .310 attack percentage for the day.

Junior Brishia Stroven posted the Lakers' highest attack percentage of .483 and finished with 16 kills. Sophomores Ali Jones and Sara Hess added 20 kills each and had attack rates of .350 and .349, respectively.

Against Glenville State, Erin McLain totaled 31 assists and junior college transfer Ashley Purvis added 15. McLain and Purvis combined to total 29 assists against Colorado Mines.

Sophomore libero Jessica Ewer totaled 33 digs for the day. Groos followed with 17.

Ewer also totaled seven service aces against Glenville State and totaled eight for the day.

Sophomore Sara Hess led in blocks with one solo and nine assists. Groos added three solos and four assists.
