Sept. 3, 2006 ERIE, Pa. - The Lake Superior State volleyball team won two matches on Friday and dropped two decisions on Saturday to finish 2-2 at the Mercyhurst Tournament. The Lakers (2-6) opened the tournament with a 30-13, 30-24, 30-22 victory over Wilmington (Del.), then defeated host Mercyhurst in a five-set thriller, 30-24, 24-30, 25-30, 30-28, 15-13. On Saturday, LSSU fell to Drury, 30-15, 30-21, 31-29, and lost to Gannon, 26-30, 29-31, 30-28, 30-19, 15-10. Trailing two games to one against Mercyhurst, the Lakers rallied back from a nine-point deficit to lead 28-26 in Game 4. After taking the match to a deciding fifth set, they closed out the win on a solo block by Jamie Groos, and kills by Ashley Wyers, Ali Jones and Sara Hess. Wyers totaled a team-high 38 kills and 16 blocks, while Groos finished with 34 kills and a .267 attack percentage. Groos also led in blocks with 27, including 10 solos. Jessica Ewer, a freshman, totaled 30 kills, a .216 attack percentage and 40 digs, while Jones, a redshirt freshman, had 30 kills and nine service aces. Setter Erin McLain finished with 122 assists, while libero Liz Holden totaled 65 digs. Hess contributed 18 blocks. The Lakers play host to Davenport at 7 p.m. on Thursday in their home opener at Bud Cooper Gymnasium. |
