Sept. 8, 2006

SAULT STE. MARIE - Lake Superior State dropped a 3-1 decision to Mercyhurst in its Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference volleyball opener Friday at Bud Cooper Gymnasium.

Mercyhurst (6-4 overall, 1-1 GLIAC) avenged last weekend's five-set loss to LSSU at the Mercyhurst Tournament.

LSSU (3-7 overall, 0-1 GLIAC), meanwhile, hopes to avenge a five-set loss to Gannon when it plays host to the Golden Knights at 2 p.m. Sunday, concluding a three-match homestand.

Brishia Stroven totaled 14 kills, two aces, and 13 digs to lead Lake Superior State, which lost Games 3 and 4 after splitting Games 1 and 2 against Mercyhurst.

Sara Hess added nine kills, followed by Ashley Wyers with eight. Erin McLain totaled 37 assists. Liz Holden, at the libero position, led in digs with 16, and Jamie Groos led in blocks with two solos and five assists.
