Sept. 10, 2006 SAULT STE. MARIE - The Lake Superior State volleyball team accumulated a season-high 72 kills to avenge last week's loss to Gannon. The Lakers picked up their first Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference victory by overpowering the Golding Knights, 30-24, 28-30, 30-20, 30-21 on Sunday at Bud Cooper Gymnasium. LSSU, whose previous best was 69 kills in a five-set, season-opening loss to Wisconsin-Parkside, posted a team attack percentage of .259. Ashley Wyers led the Lakers with 19 kills and a .400 attack rate, followed by Brishia Stroven with 16 kills (.293 attacking) and Ali Jones with 11. Erin McLain (.533 attacking) and Sara Hess added nine kills each. McLain also finished with 52 assists. Six players reached double figures in digs as Jones and Jessica Ewer led with 17 each. Jamie Groos totaled a team-high two block solos and six assists. LSSU improved to 4-7 overall and 1-1 in GLIAC play. Gannon fell to 4-5 overall and 1-3 in league play. The Lakers play Thursday at Northwood. |
